Description:
CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. Ames M1860 NAVY Cutlass

Dated 1862 With LEATHER SCABBARD

Here we present an antique U.S. Ames Model 1860 Naval Cutlass, made in 1862, in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. The M1860 was a fantastic vessel boarding weapon in its time and served well in its role in the U.S. Navy during the American Civil War. Only an estimated 25,000 of these were produced during the war, compared to 300,000 of the M1860 Light Cavalry Sword.

This specimen bears the standard markings of a M1860, but also has the number “23M” and “215” stamped into the quillon. These are likely denoting the naval unit or ship rack number that used this particular piece. The right side of the ricasso bears the anchor symbol above “USN”, “1862” and “P” for proofed, then “D. R.” for ordnance inspector Daniel Reynold. The left side of the ricasso bears the maker’s mark “Ames Mfg. Co/Chicopee/Mass.”  The overall length is 32 inches with the blade measuring 26 inches. It sports a brass hilt, a leather grip, and a leather scabbard.

The overall condition is near fine. The hilt is strongly affixed to the blade. This sword is very solid and has stood the test of time. We can only imagine the stories it has to tell. The leather handle is secure, regardless of the missing brass wire.  The cutlass style swords such as this, are what most people imagine a buccaneer, or navy man wielding while out at sea, making it a great conversation starter. In combination with the scabbard, this duo will help fill a display case!
