SWISS MILITARY Antique FLINTLOCK Pistol Cantonal
Early-19th Century LARGE BORE Single Shot
Here we present an antique Swiss Flintlock Officer’s Pistol, made circa the early 1800s. This pistol is large and has a .69 caliber bore. This handsome pistol would have been most at home in a saddle mounted pommel holster when not punching large holes. This would have been in use after France conquered and unified the previously self-governing Swiss cantons in a more federal system (circa 1798). During Napoleon’s reign, Switzerland regained much of the lost independence as well as the cantonal system (a confederation of separate, self-governing regions) but with a more rigid central government.
The lock is marked simply with a “K” just under the flash pan. The top of the breech of the barrel is marked with a shield, divided diagonally, which probably represents either Canton Zurich or Canton Thurgau. Other inspection or arsenal acceptance markings can be seen throughout. What a rare find!
The overall condition is good. The bore is smooth and dark. The action remains strong. Here is a nice example of a massive big-bore pistol from the early 19th Century!
