Mid-19th Century Self Defense Gun .59 Caliber
Here we present an antique Percussion Pistol by Maber, made circa the 1840s in England. This type of pistol was very popular from the late 18th and into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. They could be easily stowed in a pocket or tucked away in one’s belt. They were of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.
This pistol features a large .59 caliber bore. The lock is marked “MABER” and the underside of the octagonal barrel bears Birmingham proofs. This is a really neat pistol and one can easily imagine that the sight of its gaping bore would certainly be a deterrent to would-be scoundrels.
The overall condition is very good. The bore is smooth and dark. The action remains excellent.
