Description:
Very nice example of an 1850's era Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver made at Sam Colt's Factory in London.  Made in 1855.  For 165 years old, it is exceptionally nice for its age having been well-kept. It shows very little patina or signs of signs of oxidation.  It still has much of its original case colors on the frame and loading lever.  The barrel has 50% original bright blue with the balance lost mostly to flaking, not wear.  The  cylinder retains an incredible 90% original blue with all of the cylinder scene present.  Its very rare to find an 1850's era Colt with this much cylinder blue as it received the most wear from handling and corrosive black powder.  A leather holster could wear off the original blue in a matter of weeks from use.  This is as about as good as they get in terms of original blue aside from the ones you see go for 5 figures through the large houses. The iron grip straps were usually blued on London guns, but occasionally were silver plated.  This is one of the few I've seen with silver plating and it is magnificent!  95%+ silver remaining.  Most of these silver plated ones have nothing left as the iron tended to oxidize underneath the silver causing it to bubble and flake off.  That said, this is the best silver plating on a London Factory Colt that I've every seen in all my years of collecting.  The grips are the slim London-style profile made of  English Walnut that have that great light brown butternut color.  Still retains 95% of its original finish and has never darkened with age.   Back of the Cylinder still has all of the safety pins intact.  All matching numbers which includes the frame, barrel, cylinder, loading lever, wedge, arbor pin, trigger guard, backstrap.  Normally I will pull the grips and check to see if there is a number inked inside the inletting under the backstrap. I didn't do that on this one because gun has such perfect wood to metal fit (just look at the picutres how the wood is perfect to every edge of the straps and frame).  Its so untouched that I didn't want to risk chipping a corner, splintering off an edge, or boogering a perfect screw head just trying to find out something that we already know.  It's a no-brainer that they are original to the gun. Several of the screws still retain original fire blue as does the trigger.  All screws have excellent slots.  Very  Good mechanics and bore. This is a great little Colt 1849 Pocket and one of the most attractive examples I've owned in  35 years of collecting as it must have been stored in something that was close to air tight.  Most 1849's you see  at this age have their finish worn off, edges rounded, grips weathered, and metal oxidized to a brown patina.  Other than the flaking on the barrel, this one has most of its original finish that hasn't darkened with age.  It really deserves to go into a case!
