Description:
On Hold. This is a scarce Winchester Model 1893 Shotgun in its original 20" riot configuration.  Good early antique serial number in the 10,000 range.  While most early pump shotguns were used for hunting purposes with 26, 28, 30, and 32 inch barrels, the 20 inch riot configurations are by far the scarcest.  Most were used by police departments, railroads, and large factories including Carnegie Steel which if my memory serves me correctly, owned 10 Model 1893 Riots.    Comes with the Factory Letter verifying its barrel configuration as a 20" and shipping from Winchester in April 1894. The Model 1893 was designed byJohn Browning and came onto the market at very end of the black powder era.  In 1893, there were no commercially made firearms that used smokeless powder.  However,  within four years of its introduction, smokeless powder shells were rapidly beginning to take their place in the market and it was soon discovered that the 1893 had not been designed with such pressures in mind.  The action was beefed up a bit and re-introduced as the Model 1897 which had a very long and successful production run which lasted into the 1950's with a million units produced.  Winchester had already produced about 33,000 Model 1893's by the time it was replaced with the Model 1897 and issued one of the first Product Recalls in history.  Basically, any customer returning their Model 1893 back to Winchester would receive a brand new Model 1897 in the same configuration at no charge.  It is surmised that most 1893's were sent back to Winchester and destroyed as they are somewhat scarce but clearly not all were scrapped.  I've seen Model 1893's that saw lots of use for what appears to have been many years some did survive both the factory recall and likely a fair bit of smokeless ammunition...although it is highly recommended never to use it in a Model 1893.  This one is a survivor and best of all, the scarcest barrel length, a 20" Riot Model.  Overall, its in NRA Antique Fine Condition with  80% original blue on the receiver which is thinning in the high spots.  On the left side, if you get it in the right light you can see where someone lightly scratched in "USA - 831".  The barel and magazine tube have about 60% age darkened blue which is where the factory rust blue is turning to a plum blue but not quite a brown patina.  The protected areas have more discernable blue with the balance of 40% patina.  The barrel has the early 1890 and 1893 patent dates on the top with "12" in front of the frame. Note that it does not have a choke marking for "Cylinder" bore which is commonly found on 1897's but at this stage in production, it wasn't being applied.  I have had a Model 1887 Lever Shotgun that lettered with a 20" riot barrel that wasn't marked "CYL" and have seen a very early first year production 1897 Riot that wasn't marked either.  The hammer has the early checkered border pattern with the dip at the top of the checkering like you see on 1873 and 1894 Winchesters in the 1890's.  The stock has the early style rounded pistol grip knob which is correct and the forend is the early type with the 3 screws.   Both the stock and forend are in Very Good Condition still retainin most of their original varnish.  I've looked and can find no cracks on the 3 screw forend which is surprising as most have at least one or two after 120+ years.  The stock also has most of its original varnish with a number of handling marks.  It does have the obligatory 1" crack at the top just behind the frame which almost every Model 1893 and 1897 usually has.  Been there for forever and not going anywhere.  The action is nice and the bore is mirror bright and very close to mint if not mint.  Nice example of a very rare Winchester Model and Configuration.
