Description:
Original Maroon Box for a 1st Generation Colt Single Action Army Revolver from the late 1920's to early 1930's.  And no, it's not any of that fake cr%& coming out of France being sold on Ebay as real. This one is old, not faked old, just plain old!  Found this one at the Allentown Show a few months ago from an older gentleman who was is not a Colt guy.  Known him for many years and he is just into vintage hunting rifles but he turns up a lot of odds and ends when he buys collections, etc.  Go to shows, venture outside your circle of fellow collectors, travel, and you'll be amazed at what you can turn up!  Years ago, I got a S&W No.1 3rd Issue Blued Revolver that was still in the original dark blue unmarked box from this same gentleman.  At the time I didn't have a clue how rare those were..it just looked like a box you'd find a watch in, no markings, nothing.  It was worth thousands while the gun was only a few hundred.  That one ended up in the hands of a very prominent dealer who specializes in high condition pocket revolvers. I have since seen just one other one that was not as nice. Well, finding this one brings back that memory all over again.  Wish it had the original Colt still in it but that's long gone. I believe it came from the New England area.  Some of the best antiques with paper labels, etc that seem to survive in the best shape come from the Northeast.  The end has the original Navy Blue and white  label with specs for a SAA in .45 Colt with 5 1/2" Barrel and Blued Finish.  100% intact with no edges or pieces missing.  All the corners on the base and lid are good.  The maroon outer covering is intact, not perfect as there are some dents and slight warpage on the lid that could easily be flattened back out, but all there.  It is nearly 100 years old and has had things resting on it over the years but its remarkably straight for its age.  These boxes rarely survived.  The inside of the box has a stamped label in the base of the box and a pasted label inside the top lid.  The serial number of the original Colt Single Action that occupied this box is on the bottom in pencil along with what appears to be the name and address of the recipient...also in pencil and not exactly easy to read.  Original factory boxes for 1st Generation Colts are very hard to find, especially real one as fakes are everywhere!  This is the real deal and perfect for a Minty 1920's vintage 5 1/2 .45 Blue Colt SAA.  This box will be for sale unless I find something nice to go in it at decent price.
