Description:
Nice Antique ROBY U.S. Model 1840 ARTILLERY Saber

Dated “1863” & Inspected by Alfred C. Manning

Here we present an Antique U.S. Model 1840 Mounted Artillery Sword, made circa 1863 in West Chelmsford, Massachusetts by the Christopher Roby Company. Christopher Roby maintained a steady business making items like scythes and other farm implements until the embargo on the South during the American Civil War caused him to seek other product lines to make ends meet. In 1862 he began contracting with the U.S. to provide several different models of sword. His wartime production of swords numbered 48,410 compared to hundreds of thousands produced by companies like Ames. Roby was commissioned on September 5, 1864 to raise up his own local cavalry, of which he was elected Captain, to be protectors against Confederate raids in northern Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the company was bankrupt by 1867, a mere 2 years after the end of the war.

The Model 1840 features a beautifully curved blade with a single brass knucklebow instead of a basket hilt. The grip is wrapped in leather and braided wire. The left side of the ricasso is marked “C. ROBY/W.CHELMSFORD, MASS”. The right side of the ricasso is marked “U.S./A.G.M./1863”. According to John Thillmann’s book “Civil War Cavalry & Artillery Sabers”, AGM may be the same as ACM (Alfred C. Manning) Ordnance Department Inspector from 1863-64 who was known to inspect military sabers during this time. There are no other records referring to an ordnance inspector with the initial A.G.M.

The overall length is 37-1/2 inches with the blade measuring 32 inches. There is a brass guard, a wire wrapped leather grip and an iron scabbard. This saber would have been used in the American Civil War by Union Artillery Troops.

Overall condition is Fine. A very fine example indeed. There is a small crack in the leather just below the quillon on the left side, but other than that, this is a great display piece. The markings are clear, the finish is shiny and bright on both brass guard and blade. The hilt is securely seated. Its almost as if this sword never left the battlefield. The scabbard is in good condition, helping this piece find its way into a great collection.

Here is a great Civil War Mounted Artillery Saber!
