Description:
ELI WHITNEY Federal Contract M1816/1822 MUSKET

1835 Dated Infantry Musket in .69 Caliber

Here we present an antique 2nd Contract Whitney Arms Co. US Model 1816/1822 Musket, manufactured circa 1835 in New Haven, Connecticut. There were 24,000 muskets made under this contract in the 1830s. This musket started out life as a flintlock, but with advances in technology, it was updated to the percussion firing system, which was more reliable. This musket shows that this conversion entailed the removal of the flash pan and frizzen from the outside of the lock, the holes filled and ground flush, a small mound-type bolster was added to the barrel and a nipple threaded in directly. The hammer was replaced.

This process was done with many of these muskets in the years leading up to the American Civil War, but a great many were also done because of the war, when both belligerents were desperate for arms for their troops. Though this musket would have been about 36 years old at the time, it was still a great musket and much higher quality than many of the imports that would be purchased in Europe and issued stateside.

This one is dated 1835 and has the crossed olive branch and arrow, symbolizing peace and warfare, on the lock with “U.S” over and “E. WHITNEY” under. The tail of the lock is marked “NEW/HAVEN/1835”. This is a fantastic musket that has survived the last 185 years beautifully, even having been in service during some of the worst conflicts in American history.

The overall condition is very good. The bore is smooth and in nice shape. The action remains strong as can be!
