Description:
SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 with the standard 24” octagon barrel. Here is a very crisp and clean 1873 Winchester. All original and correct but the rear sight I think is off of a Marlin. S/N 158836 and made in 1884. The bore is VERY good with no pitting and just frosted a bit with very light roughness... Strong and deep rifling NO rings or bulges. Well above the average black powder bore that you see on most of these ole Winchesters.. Mechanics are excellent and it feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. Shoots very good for a 44-40.. as I prefer the 38-40 for shooting as most of you know. Both hammer notches are correct and positive.. The over all gun is a butter smooth medium brown patina with no pitting or roughness any where. A very clean and crisp rifle. Never messed with. Has very good traces of blue around both side plates and lower tang. Original dust cover is still fairly tight and retracts perfectly with the lever throw. All the markings are excellent but the 44 CAL on the bottom of the brass carrier block shows some wear and is a little weak but readable. Has the original front sight but the rear sight as I mentioned is from a Marlin I believe. I have some original Winchester rear sights and I can install one for $100 extra if the buyer wishes. It has a great sight picture when sighting down the barrel as it is. All the screw heads are perfect and sharp and look like never turned or messed with. The wood is great. The forearm has no cracks or splits and fits tight and full in most places but it is just a tad shy of the receiver at the bottom from carry or saddle wear. The butt stock has no splits or cracks and fits very tight and is even with the metal. NO gaps or missing slivers or any issues. Just real nice looking wood on this gun. This is a very nice looking 73 in the most sought after configuration and has never been messed with or abused in any way. Not much else to say about this one...Getting very hard to find nice crisp examples of these 73's that I can sell in this price range. One of the nicest one's I have had in several months so don't miss this one, if you are interested, call me.. 765-728-8049 for more photos or any questions you may have. $50 insured shipping in the USA...
