Description:
Very rare 4 digit S/N Pre War Winchester Model 70 Target in .220 Swift with a Lyman Super Targetspot scope. S/N 41** with matching bolt made in 1937! It wears a 26" Chrome Moly Steel barrel with the beautiful rust bluing which only the very earliest Swifts had before discontinuing in 1937 in favor of externally coated stainless steel barrels. The bore and throat on this one appear minty and bright. The receiver finish is of the coveted polished carbonum type bone blue and the rear receiver bridge remains undrilled. Overall condition is near 95% with scattered light handling marks and some light oxidation of barrel bluing. The rifle is believed to be 100% original. The standard weight stock was a commonly published special order option in 1937 as follows: "Model 70 Target Model rifles can be furnished with pistol grip N.R.A. type stock in place of the MARKSMAN stock in any of the foregoing calibers on special order only" (220 Swift is referred to). I believe this stock IS original to the rifle. I have closely examined the inletting which fits absolutely perfect to the barreled action and has precisely even top flat margins along the entire length of contact with the barrel. The contemporary Lyman Super Targetspot scope (also with a very low 4 digit S/N) is in superb condition with crystal clear optics, a fine crosswire reticle, and negligible wear other than the outer A/O objective which is made of aluminum and has seen better days. This would be a super rifle to add to any collection and one which you are unlikely to ever encounter again.
