Here we present an antique engraved Robert Wogdon Flintlock Pistol made circa the late 1700s in London, England. Robert Wogdon of London was active between 1760-1803 and is best known in the U.S. as the maker of the dueling pistols used in the most famous duel in American history: The Burr-Hamilton duel. The Burr–Hamilton duel was a duel fought at Weehawken, New Jersey, between Vice President Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, the former Secretary of the Treasury. It occurred early in the morning of July 11, 1804 and was the culmination of a long and bitter rivalry between the two men. All first-hand accounts of the duel agree that two shots were fired, although the seconds disagreed on the intervening time between the shots. It was common for both principals in a duel to fire a shot at the ground to exemplify courage, and then the duel could come to an end. Hamilton apparently fired a shot above Burr's head. Burr returned fire and hit Hamilton in the lower abdomen above the right hip. Hamilton was carried to the home of William Bayard Jr. where he died the next day. The overall condition is good. A few small spliced spots on the stock. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is strong. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 9-1/2 inches.
