Description:
Serial #23162, .25 Stevens, 27 1/2" octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has traces of light freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome rifle that retains about 75-80% of a period reapplied blue finish on the barrel (applied by J. Stevens when they re-bored the rifle) and a smooth gray-brown patina on the balance, with further fading along the edges of the flats. The barrel is stamped at the left breech: “REBORED & RIFLED / BY J. STEVENS A & T CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS MASS, USA". A sporting bead front sight, and tang aperture sight are fitted (the barrel dovetail is filled with a blank). The frame has about 25-30% original color case-hardening remaining, with the balance turned to a smooth, slightly mottled, pewter gray patina. The walnut forend and buttstock are in very good shape with scattered small handling marks and surface blemishes throughout, but no cracks or chips. The The action is fully functional and the rifle is in very good condition overall. This is an excellent example of a Marlin-Ballard sporting rifle, rechambered and marked by a different manufacturer. Antique
