Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Extremely Rare & Unique Alexander Kennedy II, Mechanics Hill, North Carolina, Flintlock Punt Gun with Michael Maslin Lock, Converted to Percussion, 6 Ga, mfg. ca. 1825. This gun comes directly from my long time personal collection of choice big bore shotguns and is currently the only known example of a punt gun by the maker. The Kennedy family is regarded as one of the premier long rifle makers of the era and examples of their work are highly sought after today. Large bore shotguns such as this were the preferred weapon of choice for commercial hunters who made their living supplying local markets and hotels with as much waterfowl as they could harvest on a daily basis. Pictures do not do this gun justice, it is huge in person! Originally the barrel was probably 50" or more in length with overall weight well in excess of 20lbs making it a true boat mounted punt gun. The barrel was reduced to it's current length of just over 33" during the period and used extensively in this form as evidenced by heavy wear around the muzzle. Weight is a very heavy 17 lbs 8 oz. The barrel measures 1 7/8" wide across the breech and 1 5/16" across the muzzle. The inside diameter of the bore is approximately .950" making it a true 6 Gauge. Original brass bead front sight with "A+K" signed in large script along the top flat. The 6 3/8" long lock is nicely engraved and inscribed "M. M. Maslin". Michael Maslin was a quality lock maker who worked out of Baltimore and Philadelphia during the period. Originally built as a flintlock the gun was converted to percussion early on. Overall the metal has a rich dark plum patina with sharp edges and some extremely fine pinprick pitting scattered along the barrel. The case hardened lock has faded to a mottled dark gray color. The stock is very robust overall and retains a pleasing untouched dark finish throughout. There is an old chip behind the lock with a secure 4" crack just ahead. Further there are a few tight old checks behind the lock screw and near the tip of the forearm. Overall the wood is in very sound condition for a gun of this size and purpose. Massive iron buttplate, triggerguard, and ramrod entry pipe. Having been fitted with a ramrod when new the rod was omitted and carried separately when in use. These big guns proved too unwieldy to reload in the boats and were usually loaded on shore. The wedge is a replacement made from a brass key and the drum is a incorrect modern replacement. The action (featuring three clicks) is very strong and crisp and functions flawlessly. The nipple is a clean replacement. Included is a letter of provenance and engraved display plaque. A exceedingly rare and impressive one-of-a-kind punt gun from a highly sought after Southern maker.
