Description:
Serial #9014D, .303 British, 30 1/4" barrel with a very good bore that has dark freckling within the grooves. This is an 1893 dated rifle that has retained 85-90% of the original blue with the balance turned to an overall mellow plum-brown patina that has some dark gray fading along the barrel and high edges. The bolt is correct but force matched/numbered to the gun, and the integral dust cover has a mostly dark brown patina. The volley sights are still present, as is the correct clearing rod. The walnut stock and forend still retain the original military oil finish with some scattered handling marks, as well as some linear scratches on the right side of the buttstock, and a deep bruise on the left at the butt of the pistol-grip. Crisp and clear Canadian Militia & Defence markings are present on the right side of the butt: “M&D / 1895 / 286", “RRCI" (Royal Regiment of Canadian Infantry), along with a crisp Enfield roundel, and double arrow deaccession stamp. A period leather sling is also installed on the rifle, and rates fine shape,; still supple and serviceable. According to “Defending the Dominion - Canadian Military Rifles 1855-1955" by David Edgecombe (2003), Canada procured a total of 1533 Metford Mk. I and Mk. II rifles, and this example was one of a 1400 gun order placed in July of 1895. This is an extremely nice, and extremely rare, Canadian marked Lee-Metford Mk. II rifles, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
