Description: Serial #983 H, .303 British, 30 1/4" barrel with a very good, lightly freckled bore that has an area of darker pitting about halfway down. This is an 1890 dated, BSA conversion of a Mk. VI Martini-Henry rifle to the "Canadian Pattern", that retains approximately 50-60% of the armory applied blue, that has mixed with a smooth plum-brown patina, as well as mild silvering along the high edges and projections. All of the markings are crisp and clear, including the Double Arrow deaccession stamps. The walnut buttstock and forend are in very good-fine shape with numerous minor scattered handling marks and small surface blemishes under the fairly thick armory re-applied oil finish, as well as some minor damage around the forend pin on either side. The stock has still visible markings on the right side, as well as a clear unit stamp and issue number on the left side: “RRCI / 195" (Royal Regiment of Canadian Infantry). The ramrod is no longer present. The mechanism is fully functional and the rifle rates good-very good condition. The rifle is accompanied by an original Martini-Metford knife bayonet (identical to the Lee-Metford Pattern, but with an enlarged muzzle-ring) that measures 17 1/4" overall, with a 12" straight, double-edged blade. The steel has dark gray-brown patina with moderate pitting throughout, and still visible acceptance proofs and Wilkinson maker’s mark on the 2 ’94 dated ricasso. The crossguard is correctly unit marked, but has a different issue number: “RRCI 172". The wooden grip panels are in good shape, but there is a crack at the pommel end on the reverse panel that runs through the rear rivet. This is one of 1,000 Martini-Metford rifles made for Canada after the adoption of the .303 cartridge, and is one of the rarest of the Martini variants, especially with the correct bayonet.
