DESCRIPTION: Rare martial marked Colt model 1861 Navy 36 caliber percussion revolver. First year production, serial #779 is matching everywhere, including wedge, early 1861 manufacture. Only several hundred of these were bought by the U.S. government. This one is fully sub-inspected on all major metal components, to include an initial "L" on the top of the back strap and on the cylinder next to the serial number, a "W" on the cylinder and the right side of the barrel, a "C" on the left side of the barrel and an "S" appears on the grip strap just behind the trigger guard. Trace of the CSL inspector cartouche appears on the left grip. A very scarce gun being U.S. military issued. A well-known Colt collector has said about these Colts "One of THE rarest of Colt’s is a martial 1861 Navy. They are beyond scarce". Most likely this revolver was used by a trooper from the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry as the Springfield Research Survey lists about 3 dozen early 3-digit 1861 Navys issued to that unit, which means this revolver most likely was in the battles at Fort Donelson, SHILOH and VICKSBURG.
CONDITION: This revolver is in very good condition overall. All sub-inspection marks are bold and clear as is the barrel address and other markings. The cylinder scene is very light as is the case with most war period '61 Navys since they were lightly stamped to begin with and wore away easily. The front of the cylinder is slightly beveled from use and has worn away the engagement date marking. The metal overall is a dark brown-grey patina with multiple dings by the wedge and some very light pitting on the outside of the barrel. The brass has a wonderful untouched patina. The action is tight and has very positive clicks at both half and full cock. Cylinder indexes perfectly every time. The grips have a wonderful age handling look with typical nicks and edge wear. Barrel-to-frame mating is very tight with no wobble or play, and the cylinder pin likewise is tight with no wobble or play. Cylinder remains tight with no side-to-side play and has only very minor front-to-rear play. All nipples are original to the cylinder, intact and undamaged. Very good bore with plenty of rifling, no rings or deep pitting, no bulges, just typical light black powder pitting/fouling expected of a firearm of this vintage. In all Grades NRA Antique Very Good.
