Description:
These two Charles Daly Lindner Prussians were purchased at the same time in 1903 by a wealthy Florida businessman, one to use for hunting upland game and the other for hunting waterfowl.  They remained together in one family until acquired by Doublegun Preservation, where they were reconditioned and brought back to the range and field.  The game gun (at the top in the accompanying pictures) is a 125 grade, serial number 767.  The waterfowler is a 155 grade, serial number 1034.  Both were made circa 1901-1902.  Neither gun is uncommon by itself; but as a pair they are a rare find and deserve to be kept together.

Two-gun sets in Great Britain at this time were designed for driven hunts, allowing their aristocratic owners, supported by loaders, to maintain rapid sustained fire at one species of game on a given day.  Well-off American sportsmen at the beginning of the 20th century faced a far different challenge.  Versatile wingshooters hunting different types of wild birds in different field conditions had basically two choices:  one gun with two barrels; or two guns, each designed for different purposes.

This brace of Daly’s is an excellent example of the latter.  The game gun has a lighter frame, lighter barrels, 2-1/2” chambers, swivels for a sling, open chokes (SK/MOD), and balances perfectly at the hinge pin.  The waterfowler has 3” chambers, resulting in a more robust frame and much thicker barrel walls at the breech (.235” on the waterfowler compared to .190” on the game gun).  Hence it weighs more (7 pounds 11 ounces) than the game gun (6 pounds 13 ounces),and its center of balance is farther forward.  The chokes are LM/IM, having been opened from the original F/F.  The minimum wall thicknesses are .027/.026 (right/left) on the game gun and .032/.033 on the waterfowler.  The bore diameters on the game gun are both .730”, and on the waterfowler are both .725”.  The 155 grade has ejectors and a higher quality of wood than the 125 grade, which has extractors.  The checkering pattern is the same on both, but the checkering on the 155 grade is 22 point, and on the 125 it is 20 point.   The outside diameters at the muzzles are the same (.800”) on both, as are the horn butt plates.  Triggers on the game gun pull at approximately 3 pounds; on the waterfowler they pull at approximately 6 pounds.

The two guns are compatible not only in appearance but in many of the specifications that produce consistent shooting.  Both have 30” barrels made of fine Damascus steel; both have identical drops at the comb (1-1/2”) and heel (2-5/8”); both have neutral cast; and the lengths of pull differ by only 1/4” (14” for the game gun and 14-1/4” for the waterfowler).

The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  These shotguns have been fired on the range and in the field using low pressure shells produced for Damascus-barreled shotguns by RST Corporation.  However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially one over a hundred and forty-five years old, it is recommended that the new owner have them inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing, and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the guns were designed.  The guns carriy a 30-day warranty, during which Doublegun Preservation, LLC will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the guns and refund the price of the guns and the return shipping cost.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions Steve at 703-625-4830.
