The blade has large etched panels with foliate scrollwork and patriotic motifs including the American Eagle, “E PLURIBUS UNUM" in riband, panoplies of arms, and US shield. The bottom of the obverse panel features the maker’s mark: “Schnitlzer / Kirschbaum / Solingen" in Gothic script. The base of the spine is etched “IRON PROOF". The blade rates very good plus with an overall pewter gray patina having dark spots of freckling throughout, heaviest towards the tip. Additionally, there are a few minor nicks along the blade edge. The brass hilt has a typical pierced floral counterguard with single, forward-swept quillon, shagreen grip with intact braided wire wrap, and a Phrygian helmet pommel with a floral button capstan. The brass has tarnished to a yellow-ochre patina with some brighter spots on protected areas. The leather scabbard exhibits light crazing and flaking along its length, along with tarnish on the brass furniture. Also included is a period bullion sword knot that rates very good condition with some minor wear and a few old creases. Schnitzler & Kirchbaum officer swords are not often seen, and this is a fine example of one of the rarer import Model 1850 Foot swords. SOLD Manufacturer: US Military Model: Sword |
