Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Extremely Rare & Historically Significant M1807 Springfield US Flintlock "Indian" Carbine, Converted to Percussion, .54 cal smoothbore, mfg. 1810. This carbine is one of just 1,202 manufactured at the Springfield Armory between 1807-1810 by order of the Federal Indian Department to be given as gifts to friendly Indians. It is the only time in US history that an arsenal made gun was manufactured for this purpose and also the first official carbine ever produced by the United States government. For these reasons the M1807 is considered a highly sought after and historically significant American arm among collectors. Nearly all were converted to percussion and are expected to be found in generally poor condition due to their usage. This example is fresh to the collector market and remains in very good original condition overall. The barrel measures 33 9/16" long and retains it's worn original brass blade front sight. The breech is stamped "US" with "V P" and Eagle head proofs. The lock is marked "US" over the American Eagle with "SPRINGFIELD" below and "1809" stamped at the rear. Overall the metal has a smooth silver/gray patina drifting to plum around the lock and muzzle. The stock retains an attractive untouched finish throughout with initials "C HF" period scratched into the left side of the buttstock. There are some stable old checks on the right side of the buttstock with a few tight age cracks behind the sideplate and lock. Further there are a few stable old cracks below the lock a few very finely repaired cracks along the edges of the forearm. There appears to have been sling swivels fitted behind the triggerguard tang and near the middle pipe during the period which have since been discarded. Overall the wood is quite sound and remains in it's original fullstock form with no additional damage or repairs. Original "1810" dated brass buttplate, sideplate, wrist escutcheon (period inscribed "OEF"), triggerguard, and ramrod pipes all have a mellow mustard color. Remarkably the wood ramrod is absolutely original to this gun and is fitted with an iron worm on the opposite end. The rear lock screw and hammer screw are old replacements. The action is very strong and functions nicely. The original nipple cone is damaged. This is a very untouched and original carbine right off the frontier that has never been restored or enhanced as so many others have. A rare opportunity to own one of the most important martial arms in American history which eludes even the most advanced collections. * Note that the latest edition of Flayderman's Guide which is now 14 years old prices this carbine in original flintlock configuration at $12,000-$37,500 and converted to percussion at $4,000-$8,500 * Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
