Description:
Serial #66868, .30-30, 22" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome rifle that has retained 80-85% of the original blue finish that has become streaked with plum-brown freckling along the barrel and developed some pale, mottled gray along the underside of the receiver. The frame itself is engraved with a delicate, floral vine pattern along the side walls, as well as an oval panel on the left side with the owner's name engraved in flowing script: “C.B. Ives/Bristol/Conn." Bright original color case-hardening is still present on the lever which blends into a freckled gray patina along the edges of the lever loop, and the original front sight blade and semi-buckhorn rear sight are still in place. The walnut forend and straight-wrist stock have scattered light handling marks and minor blemishes throughout with no cracks and some spots of dark pinprick pitting on the crescent-shaped buttplate. C.B. Ives was the owner of C.B. Ives & Co., a meat and vegetable company which is illustrated in the Norris map of Bristol from 1889 (the business is No. 43 in the key list). This is a really nice example of an early Savage 1899, engraved with the name of a prominent Connecticut businessman, and would make a terrific addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
