Description:
Here is a Whitneyville Hartford Dragoon cased with all accoutrements. This revolver was also known as a transition Walker. It is one of the rarest prizes of the Colt collector with only 240 being originally built right after the Colt Walker civilian. Only 30 are known to have survived, some being in relic condition. Due to the extreme rarity and high price of originals there have been a few outstanding copies built. I believe this to be one of those COPIES. Some of the features of the Whitneyville Dragoon are the arched Colts Patent marking on the frame which can correctly appear on either the right or the left side of the frame. The tiny serial numbers are like the civilian Walkers and the grips which are arched into the frame are also like the civilian Walkers. Whoever built this gun was extremely knowledgeable of the Walker and the Whitneyville Walker Dragoon and paid close attention to the smallest detail in building this revolver.  The walnut case has the correct, early coffin-style lid with a gorgeous grain on the top and also an ebony keyhole cover. The interior is maroon velvet. The flask is marked Colts Patent on the banner at the bottom on both sides. The arched Colts Patent on the gate of the flask is the same style as the one on the frame of this Whitneyville. The brass-legged bullet mold has a steel sprue cutter with the early-style Colts Patent without the apostrophe between the t and the s on Colts. The cap tin has almost all the lacquer and is the earliest style Eley Bros. tin used with the first cased Colts.  I had a number of other pictures of the Colt revolver, case and accoutrements but could only list 20 pictures here on Guns International. A few years ago there was a beautiful and original Colt Whitneyville Dragoon at the Ohio Gun Collector's Show and the price tag on just the revolver was over one million dollars.  Often serious Colt collectors will have a copy of a Walker, Whitneyville Dragoon or Paterson due to the exorbitant price or unavailability of the originals. The copy fills a very important place in their collection. In my many years of Colt collecting I have only seen one other Whitneyville Dragoon that had a full cylinder scene like this one and that revolver was priced at $12,000. This is a great opportunity to have an outstanding, cased Whitneyvile Dragoon with all accoutrements at a fraction of the cost of an original.
