Description:
Despite its relative obscurity, the Model 1913 is very important in the history of Smith & Wesson as it was the company’s first ever semi-automatic pistol. As its model number suggests, it was first introduced in 1913 and chambered for the equally new .35 Smith & Wesson cartridge which was designed specifically for this pistol. In the end, it was the only round the original Model 1913 pistol was chambered in. While the 1913 was overall a sound design, the .35 S&W was effectively its Achilles heel. Despite the number .35, the round was actually a .32 caliber just like the .32 ACP it was competing with. The name .35 was intended to avoid confusion with the ACP. Unfortunately for S&W, the .32 ACP was more powerful and more widely chambered in firearms other the Colt pistols it was originally chambered in, including the famous Walther PP and PPK pistols. As such, the .35 S&W never caught on and was discontinued in the Model 1913 in 1921. Ammunition was loaded until around 1940. Eventually, S&W rechambered the design to .32 ACP, altered the look of the pistol a little, and marketed it under the designation Model 1924. Only 957 examples of the 1924 were produced, compared to 8,350 for the Model 1913. During the production run, at least eight variations of the 1913 were made. The example shown here is a Type 4. Serial number is 3,390. The 1913 is one of those few pistols that has the recoil spring and guide rod above the barrel, similar to the Frommer Stop pistols from Hungary. The 1913 is however based on designs of the Belgian designer C.P. Clement. The 1913 has a middle-finger grip safety on the front of the grip, and a rotating manual safety on the back of the grip. The pistol itself is in excellent condition for its age, which is over 100 years at this time (2020). Around 95-98 of the original finish is still present. It is very beautiful, especially compared to the finishes they put on firearms these days. The grips are in fine shape with no cracks. The bore is also in excellent shape with no rust or pitting. This 1913 would make a very nice addition to any S&W collection.
