Description:
Serial #440, .52 Caliber, 32 3/4" barrel with a very good, lightly freckled bore. This is an converted rifle, still in the original percussion, with matching numbers (the trigger groups has several different numbers on the left side, but is also numbered “440" on the right), 1861 date, and Kongsberg “(Crown)/K" marking. The metal retains 50-60% of the original browned finish with the balance blended into a mild plum-brown patina with some minor silvering and gray fading along the edges and bearing surfaces. Despite the bayonet bar on the right side of the barrel, this is the civilian model Kammerlader with steel barrel bands rather than the brass bands used on military issued rifles (and also why the rifle escaped conversion to cartridge). The walnut stock is numbered to the gun on the left side, with scattered minor handling marks under a nice, added oil finish, and some small chips missing from around the tip of the wrist tang. The Kammerlader action is operated by first rotating the action lever on the right side to the rear, simultaneously unlocking and tilting the breech piece up for loading. The action has a heavy, manually cocked, upwards-traveling hammer that is protected by the bowed hammer spring that protrudes from the underside of the action. This commercial pattern rifle is fitted with a manual safety (also not found on the military rifles) which consists of a folded piece of stiffly tarred canvas that can be rotated to block the travel of the hammer. These are extremely rare rifles, using one of the most interesting actions ever devised, and this example, which is in excellent mechanical condition, rates fine plus overall. Antique
