Description:
This is a nice 5 piece set of original Winchester cleaning rods for the Winchester Model 1866, 1873, or 1876 Rifle. These came as standard inside the walnut stock of every large caliber 1873 Winchester.  However, they had a tendency to rattle or the owner didn't like the added weight resulting in most being removed and lost over the years.  These are in Fine Condition overall with no bends, no ferrule cracks, and good threads on the shanks.  They probably came out of a 44-40 Winchester 1873 musket from the 1890's or early 1900's OR an .38/.44 Caliber 1873 Rifle with a special order barrel that was longer than the 24" standard length. Of course, they will go in any standard Winchester 1873 Rifle in 38-40 or 44-40 as well.  All you have to do is simply use 4 sections and save the extra rod for a rainy day.  BTW, if you ever find a Winchester rifle missing one of its rod sections, finding a spare on the loose is next to impossible. The plain sections are approx. 7" in length and for a rifle as carbine rods have 3 segments that are a bit longer.  This one has the iron tip instead of the brass which dates these rods to 1892-1923...on the 1873, that would be from the low 400,000 serial range to 720,000.  They would also work in a late production 1876 or 1866 Rifle from the 1890's.  If I had to guess, I'd say these came from one of the 1873 Muskets in the 569,000 to 571,000 range that were imported back into the United States from Central America during the 1950's.  Standard muskets had 30" barrels and required 5 segments.  Also, being late production, they had iron tips. Many of these muskets were found in their original crates.  Most were nearly mint, unfired, and almost all initially had their original cleaning rods.  Back in the 50's, a nice one was $60-70 dollars...now they go for $5000-8000 depending on the condition and whose got it.   If you've got one of these minty muskets that's missing its rods, here is your chance at a nice complete 5 piece set.  Again though, take one section out of the middle and you've got a 4 piece set for a standard rifle and a spare section as a bonus!
