Description:
This is a 3rd Model Saddle Ring Carbine with an 18” barrel, serial #43XXX, made in 1870. It is period converted to .44 center fire and was used well into the 20th century, but still in very good condition. The barrel and magazine tube retain approx. 80-85% original blue, turning to plumb/brown from age. The barrel address is light, common on these models, but legible. The mechanics are good, the bore is fair, showing black powder degradation and wear from years of use, but still retaining strong rifling. The walnut stocks are very good, a dark oil finish color, with dings and scratches from use – no losses. The butt stock appears to have been sanded at one time and is slightly undersize, but it is numbered to the gun. The forearm stock matches the butt stock and is fitted perfectly to the barrel and does not appear to have been sanded. The inletted sling swivel on the butt is not factory but is of the period and nicely done. The barrel band and swivel are from an 1861 military musket and is marked with a “U” – it fits well and looks good. The front barrel band sight is original and fits as it should. The early rear carbine sight is also original to the gun with the upper portion of the flip-up yardage broken off. A metallic bushing has been installed on the right-side plate to replace the worn lever screw threads. The original cleaning rod is in the butt stock cavity and measures 20 ¾” in length, shorter than usually found in a standard 20” carbine but showing no alterations or shortening. The brass frame was already cleaned when I purchased the gun over 40 years ago, NOT BUFFED, and is just starting to go back to a patina. A few screws have been replaced. The gun was well used for a very long time, well cared for, still functions perfectly and is very pleasing to the eye.

According to George Madis in his "WINCHESTER BOOK, the comparative rarity of Model 1866 Winchesters was; 3 of each 4 manufactured were carbines, or approximately 127,500 and 1 of each 4200 carbines had a non-standard barrel, or approximately 30. Mr. Madis prepared this table in 1931-1933 while all the original records were still available. The original records were destroyed in a fire in 1933, thus there is no information available for this gun today. Over the last 30 years my research has yielded many "experts" opinions, both pro and con, but most have contradictions. I wrote an article about this gun in the WINCHESTER COLLECTOR, Spring 2017, "A Winchester 66' of Interest" covering all my research and observations. A copy of that issue is included with purchase. A copy of the text of the article is available on request. With Madis' original recorded data, we can conclude that an 1866 "Baby" Carbine is a great rarity. The purchaser of this carbine accepts that all the information in this article is strictly my research and observations and no guarantee of barrel length authenticity. Had a Winchester factory letter been available verifying the 18" barrel length, the price would be considerably higher than we are currently asking.
