ORNATE ALGERIAN 20 BORE FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL COMMISSIONED BY HAMMUDA IBN ALI, BEY OF TUNIS (1759-1814). Part of a small and distinctive group pistols made as diplomatic gifts by French gunsmiths for the Bey in the late 1700’s. Further examples are in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle as well as other collections. Examples are illustrated in Elgood, 1995, p. 75, fig. 40/41 as well as in Ricketts and Missillier, p. 50, fig. 71. 20” o/a with 13” French faceted and ribbed smoothbore barrel. Walnut stock profusely silver mounted in top quality open work floral vine and leaf motifs inset with leaf shaped pieces of Algerian coral. Ornately engraved silver barrel bands and fixed ramrod. Silver butt cap and side plate. French lock and hammer ornately engraved and silver inlaid. Silver trigger guard with fine relief floral engraving and a Minaret shaped finial. Very good to fine condition overall and all original with exception of three missing coral inlays on the back of the grip which have been replaced with a resinous material resembling coral. Very fine and rare.
