J.P. Sauer & Sohn in Suhl, Germany manufactured this 12-gauge game gun circa 1900 for New York distributor Manhattan Arms. Sauer manufactured similar guns sold under the von Lengerke and Detmold name and, for a two-year period, by Charles Daly as well. It was designed and marketed as a high-quality, durable-yet-light gun that was affordable to upper middle-class hunters. As such, it was comparably priced to an LC Smith Grade 2E or Parker P Grade.
This gun’s Anson-Deeley boxlock mechanism is finely machined. The receiver is unadorned yet very attractive and is in exceptional original condition. The Circasian walnut stock, which is refinished with a hand-rubbed stock-oil finish, is unmarred. The wood behind the locks is also very solid and has no petroleum-based oil damage. The stock has a neutral cast and a 14-1/2-inch length of pull. The DAC is 2 inches and DAH is 3 inches. The 30-inch fine Damascus-steel barrels, which are flawless as reconditioned, have 2-3/4-inch chambers and .725-inch bore diameters 9 inches from the breech. The right barrel is choked improved cylinder (.010) and the left full (.035). Barrel wall thicknesses of the right barrel at 9 inches from the muzzle are (top/side/bottom) are .028/.029/.028 and at the middle of the barrel are .030/.030/.030. Wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .030/.028/.028 and .032/.032/.032, respectively. This level of precision is rare and attests to the fine tolerances of German manufacturing 120 years ago. The gun weighs 6 pounds 14 ounces. The triggers both pull at 4-1/2 pounds. The gun locks up tightly and all serial numbers, 38110, match. The gun throws a pattern with 70% of the shot above the point of aim and 30% below, which is perfect for shooting rising birds, whether it be flushed upland game or flaring waterfowl.
The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired on the range on a number of occasions using shells manufactured by RST Corporation designed for use in Damascus-barreled shotguns. However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing, and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed. The gun carries a 30-day warranty, during which Doublegun Preservation, LLC will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and all shipping costs.
