Description:
“BRITISH BULLDOG” .442 Webley Revolver Pres. Garfield Assassination C&R

Just like one used to Assassinate President Garfield

Here we present a Belgian “BRITISH BULLDOG” Double Action Revolver in .442 Webley, made circa the turn of the 20 Century. This revolver was a small, sturdy, well-built self-defense weapon, ideal for potent conceal and carry in the late-19th and early-20th Centuries. This piece is virtually identical to the one that was used by Charles J. Guiteau to assassinate US President James A. Garfield in Washington D.C. on 2 July 1881. Guiteau was an interesting fellow who was variously thought to be insane or demon-possessed—the latter by his own father. He was a failed lawyer and debt collector and desperately tried to get a consulship in the Garfield administration, feverishly letter-writing and queuing for an audience with Garfield himself. Finding himself rejected, he bought a British Bulldog revolver chambered in this very cartridge and shot the President twice from behind in the Baltimore and Potomac Railway Station on 2 July 1881. Garfield would survive until succumbing to infection on 19 September of the same year. Guiteau, who was already in custody, was charged with murder in October. His revolver was recovered as well and was in the possession of the Smithsonian, even being photographed, before it went missing (it remains missing). Interestingly, the murder trial of Guiteau was one of the first cases—and certainly one of the most high-profile—in US legal history where a “temporary insanity” defense was attempted, Guiteau himself claiming that God had taken his free will. Ultimately, he was convicted and hanged, even dancing to the gallows.

This revolver features a double action trigger and five shots of .442 Webley (aka .442 Revolver Centre Fire or .442 RIC). The top of the frame is marked “BRITISH BULL DOG” and the grips are nicely checkered walnut. The entirety is very nicely nickel plated. Belgian proof marks on the back of the cylinder.

The overall condition is Fine. The bore is bright and the action remains strong. All the markings are clear. A great example for the collector
