Description:
Leopold GASSER AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN Model 1870 REVOLVER in 11.3x36mmR

Gasser Cavalry Revolver Manufactured in Austria

Here we present an antique Leopold Gasser Model 1870 Double Action Revolver in 11.3x36mmR, made circa the 1870s in Vienna, Austria. The Gasser Model 1870 Army Service revolver was the standard sidearm of cavalry units in service to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Leopold Gasser had been a gunsmith and designer for years before achieving true financial success with this revolver. Gasser owned several factories that were dedicated to the production of handguns and supplied thousands for both military and civilian use. These guns are scarce and have become a hard to come by collector’s item. After Gasser died, the company was headed by his brother to which the name was changed to “Rast & Gasser”. The most notable thing regarding its appearance was the use of an “open-frame” describing how there was no structural bridge spanning across the cylinder. This revolver was considered “in service” from its inception in 1870 through 1898, although it did see limited service early in World War I.

“OTTAKRING” is stamped on the left side of the frame, affirming it was made in Austria. A unique feature was included on this revolver to increase safety while it was carried. A safety bar on the right side of the frame blocks the hammer for safer loading. It is estimated that between the two models, 1870 and 1870/74, there were 205,000 made. We have an early serial numbered revolver, with the serial numbers stamped here being “14414.”

The overall condition is Good. The action is strong, though the hammer must be in the half- or full-cocked position in order to fire. This may be due to the replacement of the hammer screw. The bore is dim with good rifling. The markings are easy to read. All the numbers match and are clear. A very heavy-duty revolver and a nice piece of Austrian history.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 6 inches.
