Marked “J. H. DAMM in ELBERFELD”
Here we present an Antique German Militia Rifle-Musket, made sometime in the mid-19th Century by J.H. Damm in Elberfeld, Prussia. Damm was a gunmaker who is listed in the Allgemeinesan für Handel und Gewerbe und damit verwandte from 1 August 1838. His son and perhaps his grandsons kept the family business going through about the beginning of the 20th Century. Though any of their firearms are a rare find today, Gebruder Damm or “brothers Damm” marked shotguns seem most prevalent. This piece here is a center hammer muzzle loading rifle with a bayonet lug that would have been used for putting game on the table and protecting the homestead and the homeland. It features a full-length stock though it is really quite light and handy compared to many of its American contemporaries. This is a very Germanic looking piece that is unique in its simplicity and practicality.
The overall condition is near fine. The bore is sharply rifled and in fantastic shape. The action remains strong.
