Clabrough & Bros London Double Barrel Sidelever Hammer Shotgun, Inscribed Presentation to Charles Jeffery from Inventor George Sweet of Dansville, New York, 12 Ga, mfg. 1872. This gun comes directly from an old local estate and is totally fresh to the collector market. The Clabrough brothers operated simultaneously from two locations in England and San Francisco with their first breechloader hammer gun being made in January 1871. This example, serial number 1121, was made late in the second year of production and presented from George Sweet of Dansville, New York, to Charles Jeffery, also from Dansville, in 1876. George Sweet was born in 1818 and became well known as an inventor and manufacturer of agricultural implements and head of the George Sweet Manufacturing Company in Commonsville. He also served as railroad director for Dansville working with the Erie & Genesee Valley Railroad. He died in 1894. Charles Jeffery was born in England in 1829 and immigrated to the United States where he would ultimately reside in Dansville. He is listed as a "moulder" in the 1870 Federal Census, "works in furnace" in 1880, and "machine wood worker" in 1900. It is unclear if Jeffery was an employee at Sweet's factory or if he worked for the railroad. The gun remains in original untouched condition top to bottom and features 26 1/8" long Damascus barrels fitted with a brass bead front sight. The upper rib is marked "J.P.CLABROUGH & BROs LONDON. LAMINATED STEEL" with "J.P.CLABROUGH & BROs" on both locks. The gun is nicely engraved throughout in typical English scroll. The metal has a silver/gray patina overall with worn Damascus pattern still visible on the barrels. The engraving and markings are still sharp. The stock features a checkered straight wrist and forearm with a brass shield escutcheon. A solid Silver plaque on the left side of the buttstock is inscribed "Charles Jeffery / From / George Sweet / Dansville. April 9.1876.". The wood retains a pleasing dark untouched finish throughout. The checkering has worn smooth for the most part. There is a crack above the left lock which has begun to rise slightly accompanied by a secure old crack between the tip of the barrel tang and the right lock. Additionally there is a secure old 2" check behind the left lock. Otherwise the wood is sound with no further damage or repairs. Original engraved iron buttplate, triggerguard, sidelever, wedge escutcheons, and forend tip. Matching serial numbers stamped on the forearm (partial), barrels, and water table. Both hammers are matching originals. The left hammer is slightly loose on the tumbler and the screw is an old replacement. Both actions are extremely crisp and function perfectly. Rebounding firing pins and extractor function properly. The barrels open and close securely with just a little play against the frame. Fair bores with fine scattered blackpowder frosting. A proper cleaning will only improve them. The barrels appear sound with good ribs and no dents. A fine early shotgun with great history! For the purpose of these conditions the term "antique firearm" will hence include muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions.
