SCARCE Antique REMINGTON NAVY Revolver Circa 1863
Remington New Model Navy .36 Caliber Revolver
Here we present an antique Remington New Model Navy Revolver, made circa 1863 in Ilion, New York. Remington manufactured approximately 28,000 of the .36 caliber New Model Navy revolvers between 1863 and 1878. About 4300 of these revolvers were purchased by the U.S. Navy. Many of these were converted to a .38 caliber metallic cartridge before ever leaving the factory, as the Rollin-White was expiring. Here is a true survivor in its original .36 percussion format. These would have been purchased by soldiers and officers as well as civilians during the American Civil War.
This one has an old dovetailed and finer rear sight in the top strap. Front sight is a German silver cone. The top of the octagon barrel is roll-stamped "PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILLION, NEW YORK, U.S.A./NEW-MODEL" in three lines.
The overall condition is near fine. 45% of the original blue finish remains. That on the barrel still retains a good luster and the balance is turning plum with age. The markings are clear. The serial numbers match. The walnut grips are smooth and solid, whole except for the sliver out of the heel of the right panel. The bore is in great shape, bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent. This is a very nice example of a scarce Remington New Model Navy that just feels good in the hand!
