Description:
Text from L.C. Smith Authentication No. 2353-19:
"The L.C. Smith Gun Company. Inc, manufacturing records for Serial Number FWS 56*** show that it is a .410 Field Grade with 28-inch barrels, two triggers, shell extractors, and a splinter forend. It was started on December 3, 1949 and finished on January 30, 1950. It was shipped on February 7, 1950 to Janney, Sempel, Hill & Company (Minneapolis, MN). The letters "FwSP” in the ledger indicate that it was manufactured with a feather-weight frame (as were all .410 L.C. Smith shotguns) and a single sighting plane barrel rib.
The Field Grade was available only with rust-blued Armor fluid steel barrels. The top of the right barrel of these late production guns was often roll-marked — L.C. SMITH - Field – FULTON, N.Y. U.S.A. → In some cases, the gauge was marked between L.C. SMITH and Field. Usually, the left barrel had no markings. Some variations to these markings have been reported, and occasionally the barrels of shotguns made in the late 1940s or 1950 were not marked.
Neither the frame nor the locks were engraved. L.C. SMITH was stamped on each lock plate. The frame and locks were color case-hardened to add strength and distinction. The stocks were usually made from American walnut. The stock and forend were checkered. The diamonds were left flat, rather than pointed.
A total of 368 Field Grades in .410 with 28-inch barrels were fitted with the single sighting plane rib and made in the same configuration as Serial Number 56***. Production of Field Grades in all gauges and configurations in 1950 totaled 868. Production in 1950 of Field Grades in the same configuration as Serial Number 56*** totaled 231.
