Krag-Jorgensen Bolt Action Used in the Philippine-American War!
Here we present a U.S. Springfield Krag-Jorgensen Bolt Action Carbine, made just prior to the turn of the 20th Century in 1898. Names after its inventors, Norwegian Royal Artillery officer Ole Hermann Johannes Krag and civilian Erik Jorgensen, the Krag-Jorgensen rifle was the first small caliber smokeless powder repeating long arm to be adopted by the U.S. Army. This rifle also marked the beginning of the change from large caliber/low muzzle velocity ammo to smaller caliber/higher energy rounds for military applications. Fifty-three different models were tested and rejected before the Army’s 1892 adoption of the Krag-Jorgensen.
This rifle was made the same year as the Spanish American War and would have gone on to be in service during a related conflict, the Philippine American War. These were used through World War I.
The receiver is marked “U.S. MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY.” The stock bears the original government inspector marks “P” in a circle behind the trigger guard.
The overall condition is Very Good. The action is strong, and the bore is bright. The markings are clear. A wonderful rifle that made the Army’s cut and made the same year of the Spanish American War!
