Silver & Blued Finish in Fine Condition!
Here we present an antique, Factory Engraved Manhattan Arms Pocket Revolver in .22 Rimfire, made in Newark, New Jersey circa 1868-73. This small, 7 shot .22 revolver was very similar to the successful Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 Second Issue Revolver, S&W’s flagship revolver at the time. Manhattan Firearms Mfg. Co. 1st model of this revolver was a direct and quality copy of the S&W pistol without any regard to their patent infringement. Arguably, the Manhattan was the better of the two. Eventually, however, Smith & Wesson and the patent inventor, Rollin White, successfully sued for infringement and ended production of this revolver until about 1868, making this one from the latter ones made. Interestingly, Manhattan was also famous for its blatant copies of Colt’s patents. In some ways, this is not terribly different than what goes on today in the firearms industry. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
This little revolver features a tip up barrel for loading and unloading the cylinder. The cylinder scene, instead of simply bearing the patent information like the S&W, is that of a fierce fight between Settlers and Native Americans. This little revolver was also scroll engraved throughout at the factory, then finished in silver and blue.
The overall condition is near fine. The action is strong. The bore is dark and dusty with age. The cylinder scene is quite visible. Minimal movement in the barrel hinge, which is common to the tip ups. A truly handsome little revolver that can make a big impact on any collection!
