Here is an interesting John Martz refurbished German Luger. Mr. Martz served in WW II as a sheet metal worker and following the war because of his persistent skill and interest he began the process of altering and refurbishing various models of the German Luger. His work is internationally recognized and perhaps one of his greatest achievements lies in the production of a number of baby lugers. The actual number of these that he produced is not known for sure but as it required significant revamping of the frame and basic luger mechanisms it most likely was his rarest reconstruction. Unfortunately, Mr. Martz passed away several years ago and so his efforts are no longer available. The pistol shown here is in excellent condition with most of its bluing remaining and very few if any handling marks. The slide has no doubt been been worked by those handling the pistol causing the anticipated loss of some color in and around the barrel and toggle but I see no evidence of surface scratching or marring of the two magazines or finely checkered grips. This gun has, as many he produced, the Martz toggle safety release in the mechanism which was his modification. It was not part of George Luger's original design. This allows the slide to be released following magazine replacement by simply pressing the safety downward into the safety notch. The slide then snaps forward and feeds a new round in the chamber with the safety on. Very nice improvement on the initial Luger design. My pictures will show the disassembled parts of this pistol and hopefully tell a better story than words can.
