Here we present an antique Heavy Barreled Precision Long Rifle in .45 Caliber by Nelson Lewis of Troy, New York circa the 1850s. Nelson Lewis was a rifle maker working out of Troy, New York, from the 1840s through the 1880s. He was known for his quality wares. Lewis was born in 1811 near Speigletown, NY. The first leg of his career was as a professional market hunter and he was apparently a very good shot. He then apprenticed under J.M. Caswell of Lansingburg, NY. He opened his own gun-making and gunsmithing business circa 1843. He is said to have favored gain-twist rifling so much that he couldn’t be persuaded to do otherwise in his barrels. Lewis remained in business until about the 1880s. This would have been a premiere, long-range, precision rifle for the time. This one is loaded with features such as a very heavy barrel (the overall weight exceeds 15 lbs!), a false muzzle to protect the crown, a bullet starter (a serious luxury), and German silver hardware. The lock is nicely engraved. Double set triggers were a must on a rifle like this. The left side of the stock features a generous and shapely cheek piece with a little medallion of a stag set into it. The top of the octagonal barrel is marked “N. LEWIS TROY” and has been drilled and tapped and likely once wore a long, old-fashioned scope. The current sighting set up is a fine hooded post in front, open barrel-mounted rear, and an elevation adjustable fine peep sight. Heavy barreled guns like this are scarce, and in this condition rare. This one is phenomenal. The overall condition is Very Fine. This heavy rifle has been excellently preserved and remains in good working order. Fine, sharp bore. The action is excellent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 34 inches. Caliber: .45 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
