Description:
#4954 Colt S/A 7-1/2”x45COLT, 59XXX range (1880), VG bore (7-7+). The action is good and tight with all the clicks on the hammer. The metal is very good condition, especially for a Colt S/A that is 140 years old …..and it has just a thin browning-grey patina with very minor light crust of surface rust. It has a pretty good barrel address, decent frame markings and an overall very pleasing “Old West cowboy appearance”. The cylinder and straps have the same light brownish-grey patina, the serial numbers being pretty light on both the frame and the straps. Good fitting but obviously replaced one-piece wood grips. The overall look on this early 1880 S/A is well above what one usually sees for an old cowboy Colt of this vintage ….but suffice to say this (…and this is a VERY important fact!!)…that since many, if not most Single Actions have been restored, enhanced, and/or “juiced-up” to some degree, one should always take the possibility of some degree of restoration into consideration. This gun has been valued and priced with that in mind because it HAS been “upgraded” by one or more of its previous owners. As noted, the barrel has a VG bore, however it also is a VERY well done “stretch-job” and is only visible by a good examination. It also has what appears to be another very well done repair to a crack at the top strap by the hammer, and so for this reason is NOT recommended to shoot unless the loads were very, VERY mild loads ….and even then, I would not recommend it . However, this is a really decent looking early Single Action and a very good opportunity to own a decent major piece of the most popular Wild West frontier cartridge handgun at a VERY attractive price! As for the appearance, it is VG++. $2195
