Description:
COLONIAL AMERICAN Antique BROWN BESS Pat. MILITIA MUSKET Revolutionary War

Short Land Pattern Brown Bess, Not British!

Here we present an antique Colonial American Brown Bess Pattern Flintlock Militia Musket, made circa the 1770s. Such muskets are well known and documented as being used by local militias such as the Minutemen in the 13 original colonies. They tended toward the Brown Bess in form and function, as these were British colonies after all. Gun makers would have been able to copy parts in addition to scavenging those off captured muskets.

This one features a pinned 44-1/2 inch round barrel in a full-length stock. The trigger guard and butt plate finials as well as the flat side plate match examples of the Short Land Pattern Brown Bess as depicted by Neumann and Kravic. The lock is of French style and is characterized by its flatness, its slightly beveled edges, and distinctively broad frizzen spring finial. The face of the lock was struck with a small maker’s mark in a rectangle that appears to be “LH” with an oak leaf between the letters (see photos). While the brass hardware on this gun appear to have come from British manufacturers and the lock from French makers, the barrel certainly was not. There are none of the requisite British proofs on the left side of the barrel. Instead, there is some light, primitive scroll engraving on the first 8 inches from the breech. There is also a deeply struck “S.C” on the left flat of the barrel as it meets the stock. This would appear to be an ownership mark similar to “SP” or “CP” found on those Committee of Safety muskets from Pennsylvania. Certainly South Carolina becomes an option simply based on the fact that it was one of the original 13 colonies. Finally, on the bottom of the barrel, there are Roman numeral assembly markings, a cross (+) symbol next to a capital “I”, and a name: “S. CHAPELO”. There may be a very faint “S” on the end to make “CHAPELOS”.

The overall condition is Near Fine. The action is as strong as ever! The bore is smooth and dusty with age. The walnut stock is in very nice condition. A look inside the barrel channel shows a professional job was done reinforcing the stock with a resin-like material. This is an incredible piece of history!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 44-1/2 inches.
