Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Massive American Made Left Hand Flintlock Gentleman's Horse Pistol with Truitt Bros & Co. Philadelphia Lock & English Barrel, .65 cal smoothbore, mfg. ca. 1850. A most unusual and impressive piece measuring 18 7/8" long overall and weighing over 3 lbs, this pistol was actually made within the percussion era and subsequently appears to have seen very little use. Being too large to carry in a belt this Dragoon size pistol would have been carried on horseback within a pommel holster. The massive English proofed barrel measures 12 1/8" long with no provisions for sights. The engraved lock features a roller frizzen and is marked "TRUITT BROs / & Co". Truitt Bros were lock makers out of Philadelphia who began working around 1847. Obviously whoever ordered the construction of this piece was still embracing the old flintlock system and did not trust new technology! The metal retains most of it's original "white" finish overall which has just begun drifting to plum/gray. The stock features a checkered wrist with boarder carving throughout. It retains a rich toned finish showing only light wear with raised grain still present. The butt is constructed of a separate piece of wood fitted to the wrist and features an iron patch compartment. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs whatsoever. Iron buttcap, fancy triggerguard, and sideplate with German Silver inlays. The ramrod entry pipe is likely Nickel Silver while the forward pipe appears to be brass. The ramrod is missing. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. The frizzen snaps shut and springs forward securely. A very rare and remarkably well preserved American horse pistol!
