Description:
This is a very early Colts Patent powder flask for the 1839 Paterson shotgun or big-bore rifle. This style of flask is listed in Ray Rilings "Powder Flask Book" and also a lot of other books featuring early Colt revolvers and rifles. The design was only on one side of this flask which includes the American flag and the Texas flag, a symbol of the war with Mexico. The two flags, the canon, the mortar and the drum in the foreground are very sharply defined. It also has the Colt Paterson pistols and the Colt Paterson rifles crossed at the bottom. The bottom banner reads Colts Patent with a star between the Colts and the Patent. The charger will screw off exactly as it should and the spring works perfectly. This early powder flask was made with several different styles of chargers and either kind is correct. Some had the plunger-style charger, others had adjustable chargers and there were several different styles of carrying rings. Some did not have any carrying rings at all but were carried in a haversack. This powder flask has tight seams, a crisp design, a beautiful patina with less than the expected handling marks for a flask of this age. It is very possible that this flask was used during the Mexican-American War and also later in the Civil War. It would carry a lot of powder and would be easy to use as well as extremely effective in loading big-bore muskets in either war. Very rare and desirable powder flask.
