Here we present an antique Percussion Half-Stock Long Rifle by Franklin Schnader, made circa the 1850s in Wyomissing Creek, Pennsylvania. Gunmaking was a family affair but they were specifically known for their barrels. The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the ‘Kentucky rifle’, was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle: “From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination. Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.” This beauty features German silver hardware throughout, including an egg-shaped patchbox with ornate finials at each end. Nice engraving throughout. Nice wood used for the stock and inset with German silver décor depicting a dog and a stag. The barrel is 36 inches long and fully octagonal with a bore that is smooth and measures .395 inches in diameter. This would have been a rifle ideal for putting game on the table and protecting the homestead from predators 4-legged or 2. The overall condition is near fine. The action is strong. The hammer is functional but has a bit of lateral mobility. The bore is smooth and in good condition. The markings are clear. A brilliant piece of Americana! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 36 inches. Caliber: .39 (.395) Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
