Description:
This is a nice example of a Civil War breech loading percussion Smith Carbine manufactured by The American Machine Works Company in Springfield, Mass. Caliber is .50 with original sights, saddle bar and ring.    This particular carbine was purchased in 2005 from dealer and author Norm Flayderman who wrote the famous "Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms".  Flayderman's Guide is regarded as the one of the best publications ever written on Antique Guns.  This carbine is in NRA Antique Fine Condition with most of the original barrel blue remaining.  The receiver is faded to grey with flashes of original case colors in the protected areas, around the hammer, saddle bar, etc.  Breech loading Action is in nice shape and tight with an excellent shiny bore.  Fine wood that has never been sanded or refinished.  During the Civil War, over 30,000 Smith Carbines were built from 1861-65 with many being issued to Union Cavalry Regiments such as the 3rd West Virginia, 7th and 11th Illionois Cavalry, 1st Conn Cav, 7th and 17th PA Cav, 1st Mass Cav, and the 6th and 9th Ohio Cavalry.
