Description:
Gewehr Model 1888 "S" Model Commission Rifle, made by the Danzig Arsenal in 1894. The front barrel band is stamped "85.R.6.20", a rack number, which means 85th Infantry Regiment, Company 6, Rifle Number 20. The "S" variant is a rifle that was converted to accept a Spitzer style bullet, an upgrade from the older round nose bullet. The rifle does not accept stripper clips, only the original clips, so this is not a 88/05 rifle. This rifle features a full length military stock (with matching numbers in the barrel channel), with a patina's finish and all matching parts, with the exception of a missing cleaning rod. The only missing part on the rifle is the bolt face, as shown. This part could likely be curated from a parts house, or perhaps fabricated by a skilled gunsmith. All other present parts are matching. The rifle has some signs of age, patina and old light surface rust, however the action is glass smooth, the bore is in excellent condition, and all mechanisms operate properly. Please note that without the bolt face, the rifle is not in firing condition. Also note that modern 8mm ammunition is not recommended for these rifles. Special low-pressure loads must be used, and are commercially available, or can easily be loaded by hand. Consult your local gunsmith to confirm the limitations of this rifles action. Please refer to the photos to further assess the condition of the rifle.
