Description:
The Imperial German Navy Luger is one of the most sought-after Luger variations in existence.  The look of the extended 5.9" inch barrel and 2-position rear sight mated to the Luger's toggle action and distinctive grip is beautiful and very balanced in appearance.  These Navy Lugers were designed for German Navy personnel and first accepted into service in 1904, before the the P-08 Luger was accepted into German Military use.  The longer barrel and two position rear sight with settings for 100 meters and 200 meters gave the weapon more range and accuracy, particularly paired with a board shoulder stock and holster rig.  This was very important for troops that may be periodically involved in defensive and offensive engagements.  The weapon was issued to many types of Naval personnel including dockyard guards, coastal artillery troops, submariners, and sailors on many classes of ships.  As the years went by the Navy Luger went thru a number of small design/engineering changes, from the first Model 1904 to the Model 1906, then to the Model 1908, and then finally to the Model 1914.  The Navy Luger served the Imperial German Navy very well during it's period of service, particularly thru World War 1.  This particular example is a Model 1908 Navy, the first Navy Luger without a grip safety unlike the Model 1904 and 1906 Navy Luger.  The Model 1908 Navy was manufactured by DWM between early 1914 and August of 1916, with a total production of approximately 8,500 made in the serial range of 1044b to 9505b.  This makes this all-original Model 1908 Navy Luger quite rare, as many of them went to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean as ships were sunk in battle, and many more were ruined from the salty environments in which they were issued and ended up scrapped.  This Model 1908 is serial number 7402b, which makes it's date of manufacture late 1915 or the first half of 1916, just before the transition to the Model 1914.  This Navy Luger is all-original, all-matching except for the magazine, and unit marked on the rear gripstrap "M.A." over the weapon number "353".  We have been unable to decipher what the "M.A." stands for, as the online resources we have found say the meaning is unknown.  The original factory blue finish on this Luger is in very good condition overall, showing only some light finish wear in spots and some very minor handling marks.  Most of the finish wear is located on the high-edges and grip straps, typical for a holster carried Luger that was well-cared for.  The yellow "straw" finish on the trigger, magazine release, safety lever, take-down lever, and ejector is still very nice, showing a lot of bright gold color, particularly in the partially protected areas.  The bore in this DWM Navy is beautiful, consistent with the exterior of the gun.  The rifling still shows sharp lands and grooves and there is no visible pitting or imperfections.  All of the numbered parts in this gun are original and matching.  It is serial numbered in the commercial style where many of the numbers are stamped on the edges rather than the flats, and some of the parts that are un-numbered entirely which is correct.  All of the DWM factory markings are clean and crisp, and the 3 Imperial German Navy crown proofs on the barrel, left receiver, and breach block are all sharp and visible.  The original checkered Walnut grips on this Navy are in great shape, consistent with the rest of the gun.  The checkering is still crisp and clean, and both sides are free from any cracks, chips, or repairs.  Both grips are perfectly fit to the gun, tight to the grip frame, and un-numbered on the backside which is correct.  The action on this Model 1908 Navy is slick and precise, with the toggle action locking into battery with authority when released from the rearward position.  All of the controls on this Luger are in perfect working order, and we have no doubt that it would function just as well today as the day it left the factory over 100 years ago.  It comes complete with one original Imperial German Navy Luger wood-bottom magazine in good condition, which is period-correct for this gun but is not numbered to this particular gun.  This original Navy Luger magazine has the telltale concentric rings on the circular side tabs and the "Crown M" proof on the bottom edge, along with the serial number "1846".  The magazine is in perfect working order.  If you have been looking for an investment-worthy Luger for your collection this DWM Model 1908 Navy Luger would be a superb choice.  This is a very rare and collectible original Navy Luger in beautiful condition, and it should continue to be an excellent long-term investment for the foreseeable future.
