Description:
HAND-FORGED World War II Kai-GUNTO Style Japanese Navy Officer KATANA

Japanese Navy Officer Sword Survivor That’s Still Sharp!

Here we present an antique Navy Japanese Sword, manufactured in 1944.

After the war, Japan incorporated a law that caused sword ownership to be illegal. Most of the Japanese soldiers and citizens surrendered their swords and complied Many of these swords ended up being destroyed by American soldiers, as they didn’t want the general population to re-arm. Although, somehow, a few of these made their way back to the United States.

This one features a black rayskin tsuka (grip) wrapped with tightly twisted cloth. The tsuba (hand guard) is still seated tightly around the tang. The entire sword is held together by the mekugi (small bamboo pin) in the middle of the tsuka. Though the Japanese had adopted several more Western designs for military blades, this one was still based on the traditional Japanese sword known as the katana with a slightly curved blade ending in a piercing, angular point. The katana ha (cutting edge) is still very sharp. There are swordsmith’s markings on the tang appear as, ??, and could be translated “Nagashige”. It’s dated, ?????, maybe translated as “Showa year of 1944”. More than likely this sword was hand forged, rather than factory machine made since all these markings are present.

The overall condition is Fine. The mune (back of the blade) has no dings or dents visible. The Ha (cutting edge) is pristine and very sharp. The tsuka is in fantastic shape. Some of the original finish is chipping from the scabbard, but overall remains in great shape! These handmade swords are unique, as each one required a tremendous amount of work. A truly fine and rare piece of WWII history.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Overall length is 37-3/4 inches.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
