Description:
“JS” ANCHOR Marked CONFEDERATE E.P. BOND P1856 Civil War CAVALRY CARBINE

Rare CSA British Import Saddle Ring Carbine for Horse Troops

Here we present an antique Confederate Imported British Pattern 1856 Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine by E.P. Bond, made in London circa 1861. These are coveted rarities amongst Civil War & Confederate collectors. This carbine bears commercial London proofs on the left side of the barrel and the distinguishing mark of the “JS” over the anchor on the top of the comb of the butt stock, just forward of the butt plate. This unusual little mark with these initials is found on those British muskets and carbines that were imported by the Confederacy during the American Civil War. This piece would have been issued to cavalry troops.

It features a saddle ring mounted on the left side, as well as a captive ramrod mounted on a swivel under the barrel. The ring was made for attaching the gun to the horse soldier via a harness, and the swivel kept the ramrod—a simple but vital part of the carbine—from being lost while trying to reload on the back of a horse in the heat and stress of battle. The lock plate is marked by the maker of this piece, “E.P. BOND/LONDON”. It is thought by some that those muskets marked by Bond were among the last British imports that came up through Texas. Fascinating history!

The overall condition is Very Good. The action is strong and tight. The bore is dark and dusty with age. There is a split on the left side of the stock just behind the rear barrel band and this split does not move even under pressure. Indeed, this carbine might be considered in fine condition for a Confederate gun. Overall, a great musket made in London that survived the brutal American Civil War!
