Description:
BOHEMIAN Antique MATTHIAS MACH SidexSide HAMMER Shotgun MATYAS Prague Prag

Gorgeous Engraved and GOLD INLAID Double Gun

Here we present an Antique Percussion Side by Side Shotgun by Matthias (also spelled Matyas) Mach, made sometime in the mid-19th Century in Prague (Prag). Bohemia is the westernmost and largest historical region of the Czech lands in the present-day Czech Republic. In a broader meaning, Bohemia sometimes refers to the entire Czech territory. Prague was the capital of the region. Mach was a prestigious maker of high-end firearms in the mid-to-late 19th Century, his work featuring exquisite engraving as you can see here.

This elegant shotgun features twin Damascus twist barrels with a full-length Damascene rib. The stock has a beautiful grain and a generous cheek rest on the left side. All the steel hardware is excellently scroll engraved and panels of game scenes are found on the locks (right: fox; left: rabbit), trigger guard (duck), barrel (game birds), and top tang (Bohemian man). “M MACH IN PRAG” can be observed on each lock and gilt on the top of the barrel. The trigger guard is large and curvaceous and is coupled with an extension off the back in horn. This is a very classy shotgun and one that would still perform beautifully on any of the game described above.

The overall condition is fine. The barrels show their fine Damascene twist pattern. Fantastic gold accents. The stock has an excellent grain and remains smooth and solid. The bores are smooth and bright. The actions are excellent, strong and crisp. A very high-quality double gun from mid-19th Century Prague!
