This was an Enfield-made, 1898 dated Lee-Enfield carbine originally that was converted to Royal Irish Constabulary specifications. The metal has retained about 80-85% of the armory re-applied blue applied at the conversion, with silvering along the projecting edges and on the bearing surfaces of the matching bolt. Additionally, there are spots of mild surface freckling and pinprick pitting on the breech-end of the barrel, as well as at the muzzle. The walnut buttstock and forend have an added dark brown varnished finish over lightly sanded wood with scattered minor handling marks and blemishes throughout, including a straight, with-the-grain crack on the left side running up from the wrist collar. The stock disk is unit marked: “3. ’04 / R.I.C. / 710", and there are extensive Birmingham proofs, plus double arrow deaccession stamps on the barrel and receiver. A crisp 1902 Birmingham cartouche is also present. The carbine is mechanically tight, fully functional, in good-almost very good overall condition, and would make a nice representative example of a desirable R.I.C. carbine.
