Percussion Pocket Revolver, Factory Engraved with Ivory Grips, .31 Cal, mfg. 1858 with 4" barrel. Manhattan pocket and Navy revolvers were very popular private purchase arms among Union soldiers during the Civil War. This example not only has the distinction of being made the very first day of production but is also factory engraved with the very rare five-stop notched cylinder. Overall the metal has a dark gray patina drifting to plum with sharp engraving throughout. The engraving is likely the work of Gustave Young. These pistols came standard with light scroll engraving on the frame only however this example is more profuse with additional engraving onto the barrel. The original Ivory grips fit perfectly and retain a mellowed color with numerous grain checks and the initial "-H-" period scratched into both sides. There is a large old chip missing from the right side. Serial number "6" marked on the frame under grips, barrel, and wedge with a star motif under the loading lever. The cylinder features just five cylinder stops as opposed to the standard ten (twelve on later models), a rare feature only encountered on very early examples. The barrel is clearly marked "MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS / MANUF'G. CO. NEW YORK". Original hammer, triggerguard, loading lever, cone front sight, and screws. The tip of the loading lever has broken away and taken the spring loaded latch with it. Additionally a very small corner has broken away from the hammer next to the sighted v-notch and does not affect function. The action is very strong and functions well however the cylinder tends to lag behind slightly and does not lock up securely. All nipples are clean originals. The bore shows very strong and sharp rifling front to back with moderate blackpowder frosting. This is a very rare factory engraved first-day producton revolver that will be a highlight among any collection. You will not find another like it! *NOTE: Due to Ivory restrictions this revolver will not be sold or shipped to residents of California, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington.* Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
